Saidel Jewish Baking Centre is one of a kind. Found in Karnei Shomron, it specializes in authentic Jewish breads, and is the foremost authority on artisan baking in Israel. Eliezer Meir Saidel (or Les for short) runs courses and workshops from his home and is the leading expert on the topic of breads of the Beit Hamikdash. He has even written a book on Lechem Hapanim (the showbread) of the Beit Hamikdash. Sheryl, Les’s wife is also a baker and besides workshops and courses, they also have a boutique bakery where you can order their delicious baked goods.
We were invited to attend their workshop on breads of the Beit Hamikdash (although they have a series of other workshops which can be seen on their website). This workshop is perfect for adults or families with kids above the age of 6 who are interested in a fun, but also meaningful activity. During the workshop, one learns about all the different breads that were used as Korbanot (sacrifices) in the 1st and 2nd temple. And then you get to bake them from scratch! The pièce de résistance is the baking of the Lechem Hapanim, a massive loaf in the exact shape that it was thought to be made 2000 years ago.
This workshop runs for about 3 hours and is a great day out for the whole family!
